How to Grow
chrysanthemums
The hardy garden cushion mum is the most popular symbol of fall! Its bright cheery blooms and hardy disposition make it a great choice for fall gardens.
Always choose a hardy mum that is full and compact with little or no color. Mums bloom, on average, for 4-6 weeks so purchasing green plants ensures the longest show of color at your home.
For new plants. Situate your plant in an area that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight. Amend the planting hole with Nature’s Blend or Cotton Boll Compost and mulch the base of the plant to prevent weeds, keep soil moist and add extra winter protection.
For established mums. Pinch back growth periodically through mid July. Pinching will produce more blooms and a bushier plant.
Fertilize properly. For healthier plants with thick stems and dark green foliage; fertilize regularly. Use a slow-release fertilizer like Milorganite or Family Tree Nursery’s General Purpose fertilizer once a month.
Bloom time. Mums are classified as early, mid or late season bloomers; however use this distinction more to coordinate season-long color, not to pinpoint an exact bloom date. Mums are highly dependent on temperature for blooming.
To overwinter mums. Plant your mums as soon as possible. Leave foliage up through winter for extra protection, mulch heavily after the ground freezes and water monthly through winter.
Designer’s tip. Mums will continue to bloom in the shade if buds are already half open- any green buds will not open without direct sunlight. So feel free to add mums anywhere inside or out!
