Calathea

(C. lancifolia, C. ornata, C. roseopicta, C. makoyana, C. veitchiana, C. lietzei, and other varieties)

These popular houseplants are loved and adored for their highly ornamental, oblong foliage. Several varieties have such dazzling foliage that it looks as if the patterns were delicately hand painted. Care for Calathea plants do require a bit of a green thumb. However, with a little extra effort, these plants will greatly reward you.

Picture
Calathea plants prefer medium to bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can burn the leaves.

Allow the soil to dry 1/3 of the way down before watering thoroughly. Brown edges are typically caused by watering inconsistencies. Calathea plants are also known to be sensitive to minerals found in tap water, and therefore may benefit from the use of distilled or filtered water.

Calatheas prefer humid environments. The use of a pebble tray or humidifier may be beneficial.
Picture
Calatheas have a moderate growth rate and an upright growth habit. They typically mature to a height of 1 to 2 feet tall, making them perfect for displaying on desks, tabletops, shelves, and more.

Fertilize once a month during the spring and summer months with a diluted, water-soluble, balanced fertilizer.

Nontoxic to cats and dogs.

Record a time-lapse video and watch the foliage dance in rhythm to the daylight!
