Alocasia

(A. amazonica, A. reginula, A. micholitziana, A. baginda,A. rugosa, A. sinuata, and other varieties)

Alocasia is a genus of tuberous herbaceous plants that belong to the Araceae family. They are native to tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and Eastern Australia. There are nearly 100 recognized species, many of them used as houseplants. Tropical Alocasia plants boast some of the most striking arrow-shaped or heart-shaped leaves and add a stunning sculptural appeal to any space. These unique plants require a bit of a green thumb but are well worth the effort.

Alocasias require bright, indirect light. Keep away from direct sunlight to avoid burning the leaves.

Allow the soil to dry 2/3 of the way down the container before watering thoroughly. Do not allow the soil to rest in standing water. Some varieties can be sensitive to minerals found in tap water and may benefit from distilled or filtered water. Reduce watering to about once every two to three weeks during winter dormancy.
Picture
Alocasias perform best in warm, humid environments. Using a humidifier or pebble tray may be necessary.

The varieties listed atop have a compact, clumpinggrowth habit and, on average, reach a mature height of 18-36 inches.
