What to plant for the fall:
Cole Crops, like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts, make excellent fall crops. Lettuce, spinach and greens (mesclun mixes, arugula, mache) are also perfect for fall. Chard, Kohlrabi, Kale and Collards do well too. (We have all of these plants in! Come & get ’em!). There is also still plenty of time to start radish, carrots, and peas from seed.
Establishing and Watering:
Maintain regular water in the fall garden- this is easier in the cooler fall weather. Your plants need to be watered one inch a week.
The first frosts of fall will damage some sensitive crops. However, the frosts also make some crops taste even better. Check the weather- if the temps are falling into the low 30’s at night you might want to cover more sensitive crops like lettuce. Frost blankets, sheets, and milk jugs all work well- do not use plastic bags!
